Kindergarten students work on adding and subtracting within 10. They often use manipulatives, drawings, or their fingers to help them calculate as they learn the concepts of addition and subtraction with small numbers. Single-digit numbers are small enough to represent concretely as students build conceptual understanding of basic addition problems and subtraction problems. My printable free kindergarten math worksheets allow students to practice their addition skills and subtraction skills within 10.
1st grade math involves adding and subtracting within 20. Although they should still always have the opportunity to draw pictures to help them solve, 1st grade students start using more complex strategies such as counting on, counting back, making ten, or looking for doubles or doubles plus one to help them with addition and subtraction.
My free printable 1st grade worksheets allow students to get plenty of practice with addition and subtraction within 20. First graders should also develop fluency with subtraction and addition within 10. By the end of the year, students are expected to know their addition facts and subtraction facts within 10.
2nd grade students work on adding and subtracting within 1,000. They are introduced to regrouping for the first time, and they use concepts of place value to help them add and subtract. 2nd graders might use strategies such as a place value chart or the standard algorithm to help them add and subtract, depending on state standards and student needs.
My free addition worksheets and free subtraction worksheets allow 2nd graders to master these operations step-by-step. They can start by adding and subtracting with regrouping with 100, move into adding and subtracting without regrouping within 1,000, then into adding and subtracting WITH regrouping within 1,000, and finally students can learn to subtract across zero. 2nd graders can also practice adding and subtracting within 20 for fluency using mental math. By the end of the year, they should know their addition and subtraction facts within 20.
3rd grade students continue to practice adding and subtracting within 1,000. 3rd graders are expected to add and subtract these large numbers fluently, usually using the standard algorithm. They need plenty of practice with multi-digit numbers to make these operations automatic and fluent! My printable addition worksheets and printable subtraction worksheets allow students plenty of practice with these skills to make sure they don’t lose their knowledge of basic operations even as they start learning more complex math skills!
Hi! My name is Miss Becca, and I’m an elementary school teacher in New York. Over the course of my teaching career, I’ve taught every grade from kindergarten through fifth grade. I’m certified in both special and general education, and I’ve taught students from both populations.
I’ve never been fully happy with the various free math sheet generators out there. I feel that many of them are targeted towards high school or middle school students, and they don’t really understand the elementary school classroom. My biggest pet peeve is math worksheets that give students almost no space to show their work! Little kids need space to work, and they often have LARGE handwriting! I wanted to make a math sheets generator that was specific to elementary school students, both for my own use and for other teachers!
What features would you like to see added to PracticeMathWorksheets.com? I’d love to hear your ideas! Shoot me an email at beccatheteacher (at) gmail (dot) com with any questions or feedback!
